Our one-car family

We have had one vehicle for almost two months now.  We sold Clint's truck in May to prepare for our upcoming move.  Being half a mile from the center of campus, we can walk or bike to class.  Clint and I will be working at different times (at least that's the plan).  Our car insurance costs $76 a month; we could probably go back to paying in full every six months and save more.  With all of that, we thought with one car and a bike we can really make it work.  We are a family of the 21st century!  Take that, American Need for Excess (I'm sure there's a group somewhere with that title)!

Now don't get me wrong; this hasn't been a joy ride through the countryside with a gas station just when you need it (which rarely happens, and if it does, the gas station is really scary looking).  We've had our moments when a second vehicle would have been helpful.

The first two weeks (probably even longer) I would constantly forget we only had one car.  I kept making plans like we could both jump into our own cars and do whatever whenever.  Clint would then ask me how we were going to make that happen.  I'm surprised that went on as long as it did.

With time we also learned of other inconveniences.  There were times we really missed having a truck for picking up our latest craigslist project.  When Clint is on day shift, Carter and I have to take Clint to work at 6:00 AM!  Oh, how fun!  And the worst had to be when our one and only car broke down a week after we sold Clint's truck.  Oh, how much more fun!

With all the craziness, we can honestly say that we made the best decision.  The savings is the obvious best incentive.  Being a one-car family will definitely be even easier when we don't have to travel as much to go to work, shopping, school, etc. when we move.  I think it all comes down to making it work, and that at least makes it interesting!

  1. My husband and I are also a one-car family. We sold his car earlier this year to get out of debt. We wanted to be 100% out of debt for when we move to Denver.
It definitely is difficult! Especially because Alex's job is kinda far... It can be inconvenient but thankfully we have great friends who are willing to car pool and give rides when needed.
