Father's Day: Discovery Channel style with a side of Zaxby's

Clint is a pretty awesome dad.  I'm not just saying that because I'm married to him.  He's fun, not afraid to look like a goober, and incredibly caring.  I am blessed to have such a strong role model for my son right here under our roof (and that's hard to find in many families).

Well, we knew we didn't have much time with Dad before church and work, but we made the best of it (sort of).  Clint got off work very late (like this morning kind of late) and, as usual, was woken up earlier than he would have like to have been by Carter.  But, of course, he was still excited to start the day with his family.  Carter made a frame for Clint, and I put a picture inside it.  Here they are at Hill Ridge Farms enjoying the view from an ocean of hay:

(Yes, Clint is in his superhero pose.)

Then, after a wonderful breakfast of toasted waffles (great job, Mom), we headed to church.  On the way, we kept telling Carter to not hit anyone and how God wants us to be nice to our friends.  After church, we picked him up, and surprise! surprise! he hit other kids...a lot.  We told him how upset we were and that the sprinkle and chocolate-covered pretzels that he wanted all morning were going to be eaten up by Daddy because of his behavior.  He was mad, and he should be...they're pretty good pretzels (thanks, Ruth).

Clint wanted Zaxby's (one of his favorites), so that's what we picked up on the way home.  Carter fell asleep in the car, so after putting him in his bed we were able to eat in peace for the few minutes we had together before Clint got ready for work.  Then, I got distracted by Clint's other Father's Day gift...

Rewind to yesterday morning at Walmart.  While Clint was with Carter in the toy section, I was going to buy Clint a birdhouse.  He loves to birdwatch in our backyard, so this would be a great gift.  Well, there are like 20 varieties to choose from, and I was overwhelmed.  After changing my mind five times, I called him to come over to the birdhouses and just pick one out.  (I know, I'm just full of surprises.)  At home, we filled it with seed and set it up illegally in one of the trees (not allowed in seminary housing, just like our neighbor's growing backyard farm AKA malaria garden).

So, back to this afternoon, I was distracted by a squirrel eating our seed while a beautiful red cardinal and an orange-breasted bird closely yet oh so sadly watched.  I felt like I was watching the Discovery Channel!  (I wasn't really big into nature as a child.)  Here's the menace:

He was being such a pig.  I actually went outside and threatened him.  (Why do I refer to it as a boy?)  I wanted to do something, so like a little kid, I run to Clint and ask him what to do.  "Throw something light at him or in his direction," he said.  Well, Mr. Squirrel scattered by the time I returned to my post by the back door.

Then, Clint had to go.  I was especially sad he had to go because I wanted my fellow animal adventurer to help defend the birdhouse with me.  We're big nerds.  By the way, check out this gopher we saw by our home the other day:

Like I said, big nerds.

How was your Father's Day?

  2. Ruth, I love you too!

Rebekah, yes, Zaxby's is sooo good! I do have to correct myself. It's a bird feeder, not a birdhouse. Either way, it was deserted today. :(
