Me vs. My Calendar...not so scary.
This is my calendar. No, not our family calendar with all of our appointments and social events (that one is further up on the refrigerator...and also filling up fast). This is my school work and studying calendar. Sorry, that it's hard to see with some of the writing in pencil (hey, stuff changes). I had to make this with two mid-terms, a writing assignment, weekly readings, and my sister's wedding all coming up/due soon. It felt good to get it all on one sheet of paper. As you probably already know, I need visual aids.
The best part of all is that I'm not overwhelmed. Nope. I feel so good about that because I was once that crazy lady who would freak out having a workload like this on my plate. Go me! NO! Go Jesus! YES!
In my Biblical Counseling class, I keep stopping and really pondering whenever this fight between worshipping creation over our Creator comes up. For example, in my latest reading assignment, Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands by Paul David Tripp, I underlined these statements (among many others):
"As sinners, we have a natural bent to turn away from the Creator to serve the creation. We turn away from hope in a Person to hope in systems, people, and possessions." (p.8)
"Our deepest problem is that we seek to find our identity outside the story of redemption." (p. 27)
Even in our inconveniences, we make it all about us. My goodness, for many of us our inconveniences are our identities! We have this inclination to make ourselves the center. We put so much time and energy into things that are prone to failure (one example in the past was my focus on my overwhelming schedule). It's so nice to know that not only can I give all of this craziness up to God, but, most importantly, I get to use all of the craziness to transform myself and others into His purpose. In the end, it really doesn't look like craziness anymore.
Paul David Tripp talks about Psalm 4 (David is hiding from his son who led a rebellion against him--much bigger deal than a stupid calendar), and I was happy he included mentioning verse 8: "I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." We say that to Carter every night before going to bed, but oh my, it's a very good reminder for adults. No matter what is going on, we are safe, we are God's. Just the fact that we, as believers, will be with Him forever after this world is amazing and undeserving. The least we could do is grow and make the most out of serving our Creator, not creation, while we're here.
